Circle Time Solutions Training in Australia

INTRODUCTION TO CIRCLE TIME SOLUTIONS: For teachers, counsellors, psychologists and community workers

Circle Time is a structured framework for social and emotional learning and promoting a positive class ethos. It has powerful potential to reduce bullying, increase resilience, explore values and improve communication skills. It deals with serious and important issues such as understanding feelings and reducing prejudice in a way which is highly motivating for students. It also covers curriculum expectations in several areas so is not an additional program for teachers to fit into their already overstretched day. There are strong links between Circle Time Solutions and restorative approaches.

The next introductory training workshop in Sydney is on February 25th 2010

That day will be immediately followed by a two-day Trainer course [Friday and Saturday 26th and 27th Feb] which will enable participants to introduce, support and sustain Circle Solutions in schools, including materials and support for facilitating staff training. For further details, contact Sue

A research project on Circle Time Solutions was funded by the NSW Department of Education and Training. The findings were overwhelmingly positive but highlighted yet again the importance of appropriate faciliation. A copy of the report is available on request.

Participants in training have been very positive about the potential in circle time.

"The day was brilliant - I feel by using Circle Time that I should be able to make a difference to students' emotional/social development in a fun yet effective and non-threatening way. This is becoming such a need for children these days"

"Finally an inservice that made sense, is easy to implement and makes you feel good about your contribution to children's lives"

Teachers and counsellors using Circle Time regularly have seen positive changes in relationships between students, improved behaviour (especially less bullying), more skilled communication and problem-solving, higher levels of confidence, more collaboration and empathy and a greater understanding of individuals in their classes.

Training days cover the following:

*introduce the philosophy and principles underpinning Circle Time
* show how teachers and others have been using this framework
* report on research about Circle-Time
* give participants the opportunity to experience a range of Circle activities both as participants and facilitators
* provide information on resources to develop Circle Time
* provide an opportunity for questions and discussion

Training takes a full day. The research says that experiential training which covers the theory and philosophy underpinning Circle Time is essential to effective facilitation.

CIrcle frameworks are also applicable to other forums, such as staff meetings, student councils and executive groups.
